Intervista a Michael Bublè

Ho incontrato Michael Bublè, nuova stella del panorama pop internazionale e leader di questa nuova ondata chiamata “new swing”, qualche ora prima del suo penultimo concerto del tour italiano al Chicobum Festival a Borgaro Torinese. Ne è scaturito un incontro piacevolissimo con un ragazzo dalla semplicità disarmante. Un’amichevole chiacchierata in cui si è parlato un po’ di tutto, un pasto veloce insieme, una partita a frisbee ed un duetto. E’ stato pazzesco. Una voce aldilà del disco molto ben fatto, straordinaria. Questo ragazzo ha veramente del talento. Gli ho chiesto come facesse ad essere così genuino come è apparso ai miei occhi, non aveva nessun atteggiamento da grande star. Lui semplicemente mi ha risposto “Sono solo una persona”. Michael, questo è stato il tuo primo tour italiano. Come vi siete trovati in Italia e che cosa pensi degli italiani?

Che cosa penso....beh io sono italiano perchè sono cresciuto con gli italiani. So che tipo di persone siete perché lo sono anche mio zio, le mie zie ed i miei cugini. Mio nonno Mitch (Demetrio Santaga) è cresciuto a Treviso e mia nonna Iolanda proviene da Caruffo di Villa Santa Lucia, vicino a L'Aquila.

Ho visitato Caruffo grazie a Domenico Trubiani, e mi è piaciuto molto specialmente perché ho visto le origini umili della mia famiglia. Anche mio padre ha origini italiane, la sua famiglia proveniva da una città vicino a Trieste, ora sotto territorio slavo. Il cognome dei nonni di mio padre originariamente doveva essere Bubli, in seguito , deve essere stato modificato durante alcuni passaggi all’anagrafe, con un francesismo, in Bublè. Comunque. Siete un popolo fantastico e mi avete riservato una calorosissima accoglienza. Amo il vostro paese. Questa volta, non ho avuto tempo di visitare l'Italia come speravo: lo farò presto. Inoltre sto considerando di comprare una casa qui dove posso passare le miei feste e periodi di distensione, probabilmente o a Lucca o perché no proprio a Caruffo, dove tornerò prossimamente a fare un concerto per la mia gente.

Tutti i più grandi crooners e swingers, da Frank Sinatra a Dean Martin, te compreso, sono di origine italiana c’è qualcosa che li accomuna a tuo parere?

La passione. Gli italiani sono gente passionale. Hanno passione per la vita, per l’amore e una passione speciale per musica. Hanno orecchio per la bellezza melodica.

Mike, quando ti sei reso conto che potevi diventare un cantante?

Ho cominciato a cantare da semi professionista quando avevo 17 anni. Ma probabilmente ho realizzato che desideravo diventare un cantante molto tempo prima, quando a nove dieci anni mi veniva chiesto di cantare le canzoni di Natale a casa dei miei nonni. Mi ricordo ancora la mia canzone preferita: "I’ll Be Home for Christmas”. E’ stato mio nonno Mitch - che è ancora il mio migliore amico – ad introdurmi a questo genere di musica. E’ ancora, il mio fan migliore. Nonno è stato il mio primo “agente”. Quando ancora facevo del karaoke, mi presentava ai suoi amici musicisti chiedendogli se nelle loro serate mi facevano cantare una canzone. Fin dall'inizio, ha sempre creduto in me e nelle mie possibilità. Ricordo diceva sempre ai suoi amici. "Michael, mio nipote, porterà questo genere di musica di nuovo in altro. La farà, ve lo dico". E guai a chi lo contraddiceva!

Quando pensi di ritornare ancora in Italia?

Non saprei. Non posso ritornare troppo presto anche perché finiamo adesso tre settimane di tour qui in Italia. La cosa più probabile e che ritorni prossimamente per fare la promozione del nuovo disco e qualche apparizione televisione o radiofonica. Ma se intendi per fare "un concerto" è troppo presto dirlo. Non saprei ancora magari maggio o giugno dell’anno prossimo, potrebbe essere quello il periodo. Ma verrò molto prima per la promozione del disco state tranquilli. Sai non si può fare entrambe le cose: o fai promozione e giri in tour

Che cosa pensi di questo apparente ritorno dello swing, o comunque del genere easy listening?

Non penso sia un vero ritorno dello swing. Nemmeno io mi considero un cantante swing. Io sono un cantante pop e canto belle canzoni. “Swing” è una parola che mi ha sempre fatto divertire. Non è la rinascita dello swing, ma delle buone canzoni, della melodia, del romanticismo, dell’amore, una rinascita di speranza suppongo perché di questo la gente ha bisogno. Questa musica mi piace specialmente perché è varia nei suoi contenuti se ascolti solo quello che c’è sulla radio parla solo di rabbia o violenza. Mi piace Eminem, non fraintendiamo, ma penso che sia troppo per avere soltanto quel genere di musica.

Quali sono adesso I tuoi impegni futuri. Parlaci di questo nuovo album, l’hai già registrato?

Non ancora. Dunque adesso tornerò in Canada per riposarmi un po’. Poi a settembre riprenderò il mio tour con la Gran Bretagna. Nel mese di agosto abbiamo fissato la sessione di registrazione a Los Angeles del nuovo album che dovrebbe uscire l’anno prossimo. Questa volta l’album conterrà anche canzoni originali, qualcuna scritta da me. Registrerò in oltre probabilmente, anche se non è definitiva la scelta dei brani, “How sweet it is” di James Taylor e “This Guy is in love with you” di Burt Bacharach con il quale ho già avuto piacere di lavorare anche qui in Italia dove abbiamo dettato ad Umbria Jazz. E poi…

Qualche canzone italiana?

Ti ho già detto troppo….dev’essere una sorpresa, anche se mio nonno sta cercando di convincermi a registrare “Arrivederci Roma”

Michael, parli un po’ di italiano?

Uhm, purtroppo no, sono sincero. Sto imparandolo. È una lingua bella con molte parole difficili da imparare. Ma sto provando e sono determinato ad imparare bene questa lingua. Anche se fossi sopportato nel Canada, sono stato sempre - ed io ancora - molto fiero avere origini italiane: Mi ritengo italiano. Ciao VI AMO TUTTI. Ho detto giusto?

Bublè: the fairy tale of a young talented and simple guy

I have had the privilege to meet and interview Michael Buble’, the new 28-year old international pop star, during his concert at Cicobum Festival in Borgaro Torinese (TO) on July 28th.

Just before the concert, during the interview, I met also Italian Grand Father, his Uncle and his Tour Manager Chris Chappel.

Michael proved, from the beginning, to be a straight-forward Artist, open and unchanged by the success. When, preparing for the interview, I asked him “How do you manage, now that you are an international star, to be as simple and friendly as we see you?” his answer was: “I am just a person”.

This was the most shocking part of my interview: I immediately realised that the atmosphere, thanks to Michael’s simplicity, was very friendly and he allowed to transform my interview into a friendly chat.

On behalf of the Italian Sinatra Society I presented Mike Buble’ the Honorary Membership Card with a photo signed by Frank Sinatra. Michael was particularly touched and he showed his appreciation with a big smile.

When I started the interview I also looked for a moment at Michael’s GrandPa, “Mitch” Demetrio: his face and his eyes were self-explaining, his eyes were sparkling, full of joy and proudness. This is another moment I will keep in my memories for a long time.

Michael, this has been your first Italian tour. How did you find yourself in Italy and what do you think about your Italian fans?

What do I think…….Well, I was raised with Italians because I am Italian, so I really thought – hey – they are like my uncle, my aunts and my cousins. My Grandpa Mitch (Demetrio Santaga) was born in Treviso and my Grandma Yolanda (….) is from Caruffo of Villa Santa Lucia, near L’Aquila. I visited Caruffo and I liked it very much thanks to Domenico Trubiani where I saw the humble origins of my family. Even my father has Italian origins since our name Buble’ was probably distorted from its original Bubli.

This time, I had no time to visit Italy as I hoped: I will do it because I like what I saw and I like very much the people I met. I am also considering to buy a house here where I can spend my holidays and relaxing periods.

Talking about your Italian origins I noted a curious fact: you are Italian….

Well, I am Italian, …….. Frank Sinatra was Italian, Bobby Darin was Italian, Dean Martin was Italian, Perry Como was Italian, Al Martino was Italian, Louis Prima was Italian, who else was Italian, Grandpa? There is another guy…. Vic Damone

We have named the greatest crooners and all of them are Italian: isn’t it remarkable?

Italians have passion ……..

Passion……?

Yes, Italians are passional people, they have passion for life, love and a special passion for music. They have an ear for melodic beauty, I think they enjoy it and they deeply appreciate it.

Mike, when did you realise that you could become a singer?

I started to sing semi-professionally when I was 17. But I probably realised I wanted to become a singer much earlier, when – as a little boy – I was asked to sing Christmas songs in my grandparents’ home. I still remember my favourite song: “I’ll be home for Christmas”.

It was, in fact, my Grandfather Mitch – who is still my best friend – to introduce me to this type of music. He has been, and still is, my best fan. Mitch acted as my first agent and he presented me to his musician-friends to convince them to leave some space in their performances and to allow me to sing. From the very beginning, he has always been deeply optimistic, pro-active and believed in my possibilities. He always said to his friends “Michael, my nephew, will bring this kind of music back to the top. He will do it, I tell you”.

And then you made the big jump…

Yes. I consider to have been extremely lucky since, in 2000, I was introduced to the former Canadian Prime Minister, Brian Mulroney, who wanted me to sing at his daughters’ wedding. One of the guests was David Foster, the producer. David listened to me and invited me to visit him few days later. It all started from here……

People say you are the new Sinatra. But I think you’re much more similar to Bobby Darin. What do you think?

There will not be another Sinatra. Frank Sinatra is unique as also Bobby Darin.

At the beginning I admit I thought I could copy his style but I quickly realised I could sing in my own way. I think I managed to find the proper path. I still look at Sinatra and at the Crooners for their style on stage and, even if I take them as great examples, I want to perform with my soul and my heart. Tony Bennett told me recently: “Go on, Mike. You know I have taken stuff from people, too. If you take from one person you are a thief. But if you take from everyone….that’s research!.

Do you have a vocal teacher?

Not really, well to be honest I have two: Grandpa and my uncle……

When will you come back to Italy again?

I don’t know. I can’t come back too quickly because I am just finishing a huge three week tour here. I will probably come back to do promo, television shows and radio shows . But to do a “concerto” it is too soon to say three months from now. May or June, may be or something like that: I will probably be here, I will be back, for sure and do a promo. You know, you cannot do both: either you do promos or you do concerts.

What do you think about this return or new wave of Swing Music? Before you started some singers tried to bring this music back again. I am talking about Robbie Williams, Harry Connick Jr….

I think…well….. I am big fan of both of them. I like Robbie Williams because he is a great pop star. He shares a lot of live ness in the subject of swing, he opened up a lot of people’s eyes. But I also think Harry Connick Jr. would say the same thing……we don’t do Swing Music. We sing ……. I sing “beautiful songs”. Sometimes I sing them in a swing groove, sometimes in bossa, sometime in rock…….you know ….. so “swing” is a funny word to me.

When I think of swing I think more of a big band sound. What I am doing is not exactly swing…I am a pop singer. A pop singer sings contemporary songs and some times ancient melodies. I think this is a revival of good songs, I do not think it is a revival of swing. It is just a revival of melody, a revival of lyrics, a revival of romance, a revival of love, a revival of hope, I suppose. The world needs hope and I think this is wonderful, for example listen to one of the songs I sang, Smile written by Charlie Chaplin: it’s all about hope, it’s all about wishing and hoping and wanting something better or fantasising about someone you love, being romantic. This music opposes so many types that we hear now, so much of the stuff I hear on the radio is about anger or violence or dirty kind of things. I like that too, I like Eminem but I think it is too much to have only that kind of music.

It’s so nice to see that people are opening their eyes now to pop out and love romance, swing and jazz. And people like Norah Jones, Jamie Cullun, Peter Cincotti and Diana Krall. It’s wonderful to see that there is no room at the top for everything…… not just hot rock.

There will be another album in the next future?

Sure. Next year. Now, I’ll come back in Canada, and then I’ll fly to Los Angeles to start the recordings of my new album. This time there will be also song I’ve written by myself. I’ll record probably also James Taylor’s “How sweet it is” and the beautiful song “This Guy is in love with you” written by But Bacharach. And maybe….

Italian Songs?

I’ve told you too much … It will be a surprise!

Michael, do you speak a little bit of Italian?

Uhm, my honest answer is unfortunately not very much. I am learning it. It’s a beautiful language with many difficult words to learn. But I am trying and I am determined to pick up not only just a few words but to be more fluent in my ancestor’s language. Even if I was born in Canada, I have always been - and I still am – very proud to have Italian origins: I feel Italian.

Do you want to add something to your Italian fans?

Oh yes, if I would only speak to one of you I would probably say TI AMO; but since you are many – or at least, I hope – I say VI AMO TUTTI. Did I just say I LOVE YOU EVERYONE?

At the end of this interview Michael and I duetted, for the few people present, singing “Fly me to the moon”. Simply Thrilling! Two “MB” singing together. Michael Bublè and I! Yeah!!!

What an extraordinary voice and talent, guys! I heard wit my ears his voice, without any sort of amplification!
